Some Lesser Known Facts About Gaurika Singh
Gaurika Singh was born in Nepal and at the age of two she moved to London along-with her family.
Her mother, Garima Rana, is the 1994 SLC Board Topper.
She takes her training at Copthall Swimming Club in London under coaches Christine Green and Rhys Gormley, who are known to have produced world-class swimmers.
Gaurika started competing in the Nepal Championships at the age of eleven.
She has won many awards and has broken many national records since the beginning of her swimming career at a very young age.
At the 2016, South Asian Games, she won 1 silver and 2 bronze medals.
According to her father, Paras Rana, Gaurika gets up at 4:00 a.m. each day.
In April 2015, when a massive earthquake hit the Nepal, Gaurika was in Kathmandu along-with her mother and little brother Sauren. She explains- “We were on the fifth floor of a building that we couldn’t escape from, so we sheltered under a table for 10 minutes in the middle of the room and had to go down the stairs afterwards amid the aftershocks.”
She contributed 200 pounds sterling (from the earnings of national championships) for the Nepal earthquake victims.
In June 2015, she became the Goodwill Ambassador of the Shanti Education Initiative Nepal (SEIN).Â
In 2016, she was selected for the Rio Olympics to represent Nepal and became the youngest Olympian in Rio.
