Rahat is popularly known as a Qawwal and belongs to the ‘Qawwal Bachon ka Gharana ( lit. the house of Qawwal Children),’ a primordial qawwali group of 12 children said to have been assembled by Amir Khusro in the 13th century ACE for a musical dialogue with a Hindu religious luminary.
His family has its roots in Ghazni in Afganistan. During the era of Mahmud of Ghazni, his forefathers migrated to India with the saint, Sheikh Darwesh.
When Rahat was 7 years old, he started learning music from his father. At the age of 13, he started his formal training in music.
He considers his uncle, Ustaad Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan and his father, Ustaad Farrukh Fateh Ali Khan as his inspirations, with whom he used to attend live concerts.
In 1985, he gave his first stage performance at the age of 10 when Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan toured United Kingdom.
In 1995, he made his Hollywood debut by contributing to a soundtrack of a film, Dead Man Walking.
After the death of his uncle Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan in 1997, he composed and sung few songs, but at that time it couldn’t be released. In 2002,  when Pooja Bhatt went to Pakistan, she liked his song Mann Ki Lagan and took it for her film Paap, that’s how he made his Bollywood debut in 2003.
In 2011,  he had a car accident in the US on his journey from Detroit to Chicago in which he miraculously got saved.
