He was born at the end of World War II in Fukuoka on the island of Kyushu in Japan.
Initially he was interested in Chemistry and later he switched his focus to Molecular Biology.
He is the youngest of 4 brothers.
In 1974, he received his PhD from the University of Tokyo.
Before coming back to Japan in the late 1980s, he spent several years at the Rockefeller University in New York.
Ohsumi is considered as the 1st scientist to define cell recycling.
On October 3, 2016, he became the 25th Japanese to receive a Nobel Prize and the 4th in the Medicine category.
The main focus of his work is on how cells break down and recycle their content termed as- autophagy (self-eating).
